A bit more about Ladybower Reservoir

Tents

Ladybower Reservoir boasts such stunning beauty that it has become a haven for countryside lovers. Ladybower is the biggest and lowest of the three reservoirs at the location, which include Derwent Reservoir and Howden Reservoir. Fairholmes visitor centre is located towards the north of the Ladybower Brook, while the east of the reservoir is overlooked by Hordron Edge stone circle; a Bronze Age structure also known as the ‘Seven Stones of Hordron.’

History of Ladybower Reservoir

Caravan

One of the most interesting aspects of Ladybower Reservoir are the two villages that were purposely submerged so that the constructs could be created. Derwent and Ashopton villages were flooded so that the area could be turned into a reservoir, and in the extremely dry conditions of 2022, 2018, 1995 and 1976, the water levels dropped to such an extent that the village of Derwent began to re-emerge through the water.

Ladybower itself was built between 1935 and 1943 by the Derwent Valley Water Board to supply water to the East Midlands despite local opposition at the time. It took two years to fill, containing 464 billion litres, and it was officially opened by King George VI, with wife Queen Elizabeth, in 1945.

What is there to do at Ladybower Reservoir?

Ladybower is the most accessible of the reservoirs, which makes it the perfect place to walk. There are plenty of trails if cycling is your thing, with bike hire available, and there is also a cafe at the visitor centre to stop for a break and refreshments. Fishing is also possible at the reservoir, which attracts around 2 million people a year.
